What three words would you use to describe L&C?
What’s your favorite class? Why?
Philosophy and the Environment with Professor Jay Odenbaugh. It was an inspiring course that truly expanded my perspective on environmental ethics. Dr. Odenbaugh was an enthusiastic professor who posed engaging questions and fostered a space for students to debate key environmental topics.
What made you want to come to Lewis & Clark?
After visiting Lewis & Clark, I felt a sense of belonging. I knew Lewis & Clark would connect me with people and places in an individual way that would allow me to expand my perspective on life, community, and the world.
What do you like or find most interesting about your major?
As an environmental studies major, I enjoy the interdisciplinary nature of the breadth and required courses as I feel it allows me to challenge my views and explore my passion for the environment through different perspectives.
What do you like or find most interesting about your minor?
As a political science minor, I greatly enjoy the variety of courses offered. I feel like there is flexibility in selecting courses that are the most appealing to me and would compliment my environmental studies major.
Tell us about your support systems and social outlets on campus: people, activities, clubs, res halls, etc.
I love spending time with my friends and exploring the Portland area! I am an avid hiker and have enjoyed trips through College Outdoors and on my own. Lewis & Clark has so much to offer as far as activities and it is a great way to meet new people and foster new hobbies. Getting involved in student organizations is a fun way to foster new friendships and really get involved in the L&C community.
What advice do you have for incoming students?
Be yourself and reach out to new people! The community at L&C is truly unlike anything I have experienced before. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and forge connections with both peers and professors.
Have you been involved with one of our symposia, as an organizer or participant? What was the experience like? How did the event complement your academic experience?
I am currently a cochair for the fall 2023 Environment Across Boundaries (ENVX) Symposium. It has been an amazing opportunity to connect with different global, national, and local scholars, entrepreneurs, and leaders. The theme for the 2023 symposium is Life Within Capitalism: Reconsidering Market Consequences and the Earth System. I feel that I have grown so much both personally and academically through this experience.
What’s your favorite thing about living in Portland?
Portland is a funky city with so many great places to explore but my favorite part is the ample outdoor spaces. Tryon Creek State Park is across the street from Lewis & Clark, and there are so many other amazing natural areas within a short drive or bus ride of campus. I love that I can feel relatively secluded in nature and still experience the city.
What’s one of the best spots on campus?
I really love spending time on the lawn near the reflecting pool and in Watzek Library! Both places are great to study and feel close to nature.
